Former All-Big Ten honoree Phil Presser is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the men's soccer program. This former Indiana standout helped lead the Hoosiers to their fifth National Championship in 1999, making three appearances to the NCAA College Cup during his tenure as a four-year letterwinner for the Hoosiers from 1999-02.

In his three years as a full-time assistant, Presser has coached three National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Americans and has had four players sign Major League Soccer (MLS) professional contracts. Since Presser’s return in 2006, Indiana has been on top of recruiting bringing in the #2 class in 2006, #2 in 2007, and the #3 class in the country in 2008 according to ESPNsoccernet.com and College Soccer News.

In 2008, Presser helped lead the Hoosiers to a 14-7-3 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. With his guidance Indiana had four All-Big Ten selections, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, an NSCAA All-American and a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. Two of his pupils from that squad went on to play professionally as 2009 MLS draftees.
Prior to returning to Indiana, Presser was an assistant coach under former Indiana assistant and player John Trask at the University of Illinois-Chicago during the 2005 season. Presser helped Trask’s UIC from a 5-12-2 record to a 12-5-2 record making it the sixth best turnaround in the country.

Presser is no stranger to coaching at Indiana. In 2003, he became the first undergraduate assistant coach for the squad. The 2003 team went on to win the first championship of back-to-back national title runs in 2003 and 2004. The Cream and Crimson went 17-3-5 in his first season on staff, finishing without a defeat in the final 18 matches of the campaign.
As a player 2002, the Hoosier defense ranked 15th nationally in goals against average at 0.77 with Presser. The squad also notched eight shutouts. In all, Presser helped the IU program to a 70-18-3 record (.786), including three trips to the NCAA College Cup.

Presser was a three-year starter for the Hoosiers at the defensive midfield position. He earned All-Big Ten accolades in 2001 and 2002. In total, Presser started 67 games during his four-year career. The versatile player tallied 10 career points with two goals and six assists. His lone goal in the 2001 season proved to be the game-winner in the third round of the NCAA Tournament against Rutgers.

The Fort Wayne, Ind., native was the 1998 Indiana Player of the Year, a high school All-American and the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a senior at Canterbury High School. He led the Cavaliers to consecutive Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) State Championships. In 2007, Presser was one of ten all-time athletes to be inducted to the Canterbury High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Along with his exploits in the collegiate and prep ranks, Presser played professionally for two years with the Kansas City Comets and the Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He helped the Comets reach the final four in 2004.
In 2003, Presser graduated from Indiana with a bachelor's degree in management from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). He and his wife, Kristal, reside in Bloomington. Their first child, Ava Victoria, was born in September 2008.
